Neurology

Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the brain and nerves. Since the brain and its extensions, the nerves, play a central role in the coordinated functioning of all organs in our body, early recognition and treatment of their diseases are of utmost importance.

Recent scientific developments have necessitated the classification and evaluation of neurological diseases into different disciplines.

Among the most common neurological diseases are:

  • Migraine
  • Vertigo (Dizziness)
  • Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke)
  • Epilepsy
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia
  • Muscular Disorders
  • Sleep Disorders

Various devices are used in the diagnosis of neurological diseases, and these are evaluated in conjunction with the patient’s clinical features and examination.

Some of these devices include:

  • Cranial MRI
  • Cranial CT
  • EMG (Electromyography)
  • EEG (Electroencephalography)
  • Doppler Ultrasound

Of the examinations mentioned above, EEG and EMG are tests conducted within the neurology department.

EEG

Briefly, it is an examination method where data obtained by representing the electrical function of the brain on paper or, more commonly nowadays, in digital format are evaluated. It is mainly used in the diagnosis and monitoring of epilepsy, but it is also beneficial in diagnosing various other neurological diseases.

EMG

It is used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting nerve fibers, muscles, and the connection points of the spinal cord. For example, it is used in diagnosing and monitoring nerve damage caused by diabetes, as well as in diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome, which is characterized by compression and functional loss of nerve fibers passing through narrow points, resulting in numbness primarily in the hands. In addition to these diseases, EMG is used in the diagnosis of neurological diseases that primarily affect nerve fibers, muscles, and the spinal cord.

MS (Multiple Sclerosis)

The exact cause of this disease is unknown. In short, it is a chronic disease caused by our immune system mistakenly attacking and damaging the sheaths surrounding nerves in the brain and spinal cord in episodic attacks. Depending on the nerve damaged by the immune system, it manifests itself with complaints such as loss of vision or blurred vision in a single eye, or weakness or numbness on one side of the body.

MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is more common in young adults and is the most common cause of disability in this age group, especially in North America, following trauma. According to recent studies conducted in our country, its prevalence is increasing.

Since MS can be confused with a wide range of neurological diseases, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing disability in the early stages. At this stage, it is essential for a neurologist experienced in MS to make the correct diagnosis and provide the appropriate treatment based on current guidelines, along with regular follow-ups.

Our hospital stands out with its experienced staff, equipment, and treatment units, especially in MS, and the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of many other neurological diseases are carried out using all the possibilities of modern medicine and state-of-the-art laboratory methods.
